On 5th August, Voice of America News aired a short news clip in Russian about human security and development in the Arctic. Just a few days beforehand, Russia had resubmitted to the UN its extensive claim to the Arctic Ocean seabed. But VOA News happily chose to focus on the Arctic’s human dimension instead, rather than simply repeat the typical news story about the Arctic as a global treasure chest, pristine wilderness, or potential conflict zone — or all three at once.
I come in at about the 2’06” mark, comparing and contrasting development issues in Nunavut and Alaska as discussed earlier that day during my presentation at the Wilson Center in Washington, DC.
